Don't know where to start?
1982-2022 - 40 years of humble but purposeful existence! Akshaya deeply thanks all its stakeholders.
India is home to 26.8 million persons with disabilities out of a total population of 1.21 billion (Census 2011), constituting 2.21%. Therefore, it is incumbent on the part of NGOs like Akshaya to address rehabilitation and empowerment of the differently abled, supplementing the role played by government agencies.
Akshaya is a non- profit initiative devoted to the rehabilitation – physical, emotional, social and economic – of the differently abled. It is registered under Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act (No 28/83).
Originally it was founded by a group of railway men and their friends to help out a fellow worker to undergo treatment abroad.
True to its meaning (eternal, immortal, indestructible) Akshaya has overcome many trials and tribulations, continues to be vibrant to this day and has carved a niche for itself among service based organizations in Chennai – a tribute to the Great Trinity – Shri R Srinivasan, late Shri A V Subramanian (multi lingual writer & author) and late Shri B Madhavan (from an illustrious family of founders of Indian Bank, Sanskrit College and several other educational institutions) who occupied the highest positions in the Indian Railways and mentored us by holding the post of Chairman and President for nearly three decades.
Sky is the limit for fund requirements for any NGO. We did not experience resource crunch so long as we were in receipt of grants-in-aid from the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt of India from late 1980s to the early part of the millennium.
Since then we primarily depend upon large donations from Trusts linked to Sivasailam Charities, donations from the family of our Chairman, Shri M Anantharamakrishnan alias Anand Madhavan (at whose residence we have our rent free office, conduct our EC and service meetings) and periodical contributions from our members and well wishers. In the last few years we have started building a corpus which now stands at Rs.11 lakhs (in fixed deposits) and which of course has to go up.
We want to reach out to more disabled brethren for which we need more funds. It is here CSR initiatives of Corporates can help Akshaya to expand its horizon of service. Needless to add that fitting of aids / appliances to the differently abled comes within the ambit of CSR Rules – Schedule VII. Recognizing our good work, Maveric Systems have enlisted Akshaya as one of their CSR partners effective from March 2018. They have been a great source of strength and support to us in pursuing our cherished goals.
